As a kid George Boston saw Howard Thurston perform at the National Theater at 6219 S. Halsted in Chicago’s Englewood neighborhood. The bug bit and launched Boston into a career in magic. Among other accomplishments Boston is remembered as Tony Curtis’ magic coach for his role in the film Houdini.
Most of his career was behind the scenes as chief assistant and stage manager for the large touring magic shows of Harry Blackstone Sr., Charles Carter and Eugene Laurant. Boston writes about these adventures in his fascinating book Inside Magic.
Boston nearly came full circle when he was invited to join the Thurston show. He is often credited with having worked with Howard. However, magic historian Jim Steinmeyer, who wrote the book on Howard Thurston (literally), points out that Boston actually worked for Howard’s colorful “carny” brother Harry Thurston.
